Billionaire MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has donated $2.7bn to a range of charities around the world. Announcing her decision in a blog post, Scott said that this was being done as “people struggling against inequities deserve center stage in stories about change they are creating.”
It is not the first time that Scott, an author, has donated to charities. In December, she announced she had donated more than $4bn to women-led charities, food banks, and colleges.
This is part of her ‘Giving Pledge’ that she entered in 2019. The Giving Pledge is a commitment by the world’s richest to dedicate the majority of their wealth to charities.
The latest tranche of donations would go to 286 organizations or “teams” as Scott put it, who are “empowering voices the world needs to hear.” These include Universities, nonprofits and others from around the world. As many as 12 organizations are from India. These include the GiveIndia Foundation and The/Nudge. These organizations are involved in programs of poverty alleviation and livelihood and skill development, respectively.
“More than anything this is testimony to the impactful work we have been doing over the years, including our recent COVID response work, and the trust placed in us to continue on our journey of enabling giving to alleviate poverty in India,” said GiveIndia on its website.
The University of Texas at San Antonio and San Antonio College have announced they have received $40 million and $15 million as gifts from Scott. Others have also announced similarly.
According to experts, charities are chosen by Scott after her team of advisers go through thousands of organizations and come up with a list of those who deserve the money.
