The UK government is committing to leaving the environment "in a better state than we found it" following a review of the economic importance of nature. But will they make all the changes needed to both protect the economy and the natural world?
Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta was commissioned by the UK Treasury in 2019 to conduct the review. His review found that the planet is at risk by the failure of economies to account for the environment and urges governments to find new ways to account for GDP to include the natural world, as well as create organizations to protect our natural resources, such as oceans and rainforests.
The UK government's response to these findings include requiring new "nationally significant infrastructure" projects in England to have an overall positive effect on nature. They, however, will not be making some of Dasgupta's largest suggestions, such as no longer accounting for GDP.
This comes on the heels of the G7 Summit in Cornwall, where international leaders reaffirmed their commitment to protect and restore 30% of the natural world by 2030. However, whether they will pledge the funds and resources needed to achieve that goal remains to be seen.
