Continuing with our discussion on fast fashion industry and it's impact on environment, let's look on facts.
Less than 1% of the fiber is reused to make new garments. This is worth billions of dollars in clothing that isn't reused and disposed of as waste, and has a negative impact on the environment, the Foundation says.
According to the United Nations Environment Program, the global fashion industry consumes the second largest amount of water. From cotton production to retail delivery of final products, jeans require 3,781 liters of water (equivalent to the amount of water a person drinks in three years), according to the report. According to a report co-produced by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, India's domestic textile and clothing industry contributed nearly 2% to GDP and 14% to industrial production in 2018. As mentioned earlier, according to the Indian Textile Journal, more than 1 million tons of fiber are discarded each year in India, most of which is for household use. Textiles make up about 3% by weight of household trash cans. Textile waste is also the third largest source of municipal waste in India.
