When words fail us, we turn to art.
With the constant stress of the pandemic, we are often overwhelmed. Sometimes we feel like we’re drowning in a pool of anxiety and uncertainty. When words fail and you need an instant escape from the stress around you – psychologists suggest that we turn to art.
Art has historically been used to help war veterans and civilians suffering from PTSD post the World Wars. It has come a long way since. Today “Mask making” is used as a form of art intervention to help war veterans with PTSD.
In the words of Pablo Picasso –
Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
Art provides us a way to express ourselves. To vent out. To release our stress and capture various moments in time. By expressing yourself -you free up space in your mind – giving you more mental clarity. It allows you to think more creatively ,work more efficiently and be more productive.
The strokes of a paintbrush, the molding of clay and the stringing of beads are just some forms of art to help liberate yourself. You could cut out pictures from magazines and make a collage ,make a paper mâché or doodle.
Mandalas and Zentangles have been gaining exposure in helping children as young as 3 years all the way to students and working professionals.
An experiment conducted by SoulPancake aimed to study the happiness levels of participants after they engaged in a painting session.Results showed that the average increase in happiness levels was 8.1 % with the highest rise in happiness levels being 36.7 %.
You don’t have to be an artist to start out. So, grab a journal and gather some art supplies.
