He was the first South African batsman to score 20 Test match centuries. He is also the first cricketer from South Africa to reach the milestone of 5000 Test runs.

He once batted for over 14 and a half hours scoring 275 against England at Kingsmead.
He averaged 53.85 on the subcontinent, with four hundreds and seven half-centuries in 13 Tests in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
As head coach, he guided India to become the top-ranked team in test cricket as well as winning the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
