The Senegalese denounce a democratic crisis "unjustified" according to a large part of the population, of the main political opponent Ousmane Sonko, accused of rape. For them, this accusation has been fabricated to exclude him from the presidential race of 2024. His parliamentary immunity was also lifted. Indeed, this is not the first time that current President Macky Sall has attacked political opponents.
On the other hand, a large part of the population feels left out. Poverty is increasing, the covid 19 crisis is taking its toll. Even health care workers are not given priority to be vaccinated, while the presidency organizes vaccinations at the presidential palace, disconnected from reality and the social and economic crisis of the country.
The Senegalese government is currently cutting telephone lines and censoring many social networks, websites and television channels. To date Ousmane Sonko has been released under judicial supervision, this event has nevertheless triggered the voice of a people.
I pray for all the victims and their families but also for a people who are fighting for their freedom and their convictions. Senegal is a country that is dear to me, let us not leave what is happening in silence.
