Goalkeeper Ben Foster has announced his retirement from football for a second time.

The 40-year-old has called time on a career that included 390 Premier League appearances for Watford, Manchester United, Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion, with 92 clean sheets.

Only eight more goalkeepers have made more appearances in the competition.

His total of 1,248 saves is the most in the competition’s history since such data was recorded from the 2003/04 season.

After initially announcing his retirement a year ago, Foster put on his gloves one last time to help Wrexham earn promotion back to the Football League last season.

'Timing is right'

“I think the timing is right,” Foster said on his Instagram page after Wrexham's 5-5 draw at the weekend with Swindon Town.

"I feel sometimes you just got to be honest with yourself, brutally honest with yourself, and just admit you can’t really do what you used to do, it’s a shame, but being 40-years-old, that’s to be expected as well."

Foster first appeared in the Premier League with Watford during 2006/07 and it was with them he would play his final top-flight season in 2021/22.
