Guilt is something we all feel at some point in our lives, at times even for the tiniest of things. While guilt may seem like a very normal emotion to feel, in certain situations it can be unhealthy and unproductive if left unchecked.
Ways to understand your guilt and deal with it include:
1. Questioning the guilt
Ask yourself if the guilt is appropriate and let it go if it’s unnecessary. The guilt is appropriate if it helps us grow and serves a purpose. It would be inappropriate if it’s unhealthy and serves no rational purpose.
2. Cognitive Affective Transformations
Learn to differentiate between condemning behavior as opposed to condemning oneself.
3. Making Changes
Healthy guilt will tell us we need to do something to improve. But unhealthy guilt only makes us feel bad.
4. Reframing Guilt
Change: ‘I am not doing enough’ to ‘I am constantly making an effort and exploring ways to do the best I can each day’.
5. Acceptance
Accept the limitations and focus on how you’re trying to make things work.
