Kalvin Phillips is one of the less controversial members of the England squad. He is a combative defensive midfielder who has been used to playing high-intensity football under Bielsa in Leeds before moving to a more calm and composed game under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. He got called up for England in 2020 when he became only the third player this century to represent England before making any Premier League appearance.
Many have described him as a midfielder with a superb passing range and great tactical awareness, stamina and strength capable of playing in a single or a double pivot.
Current Form
Kalvin Phillips has had minimal game time this season, getting injured barely five games into the season. Although he's had little cameos at various points during the season, he has only been able to play a combined 53 minutes combined across all competitions this season. He'll be banking on the fact that form is temporary and class is permanent heading into the world cup with the hope that his lack of game time doesn't affect his match sharpness and overall fitness level.
World Cup record
This will be Phillips's first appearance at the World Cup, and he would be banking on his experience at the Euros 2020, alongside his 20 caps for England, to be pivotal for his success in the tournament.
Club Career
Phillips is a Leeds man all the way, playing through the ranks of the Leeds academy till he developed to be part of the first team. He won the Championship and helped Leeds gain promotion in 2019/20, helping them survive relegation in the 2021/22 season. When City came knocking, he had little to think about and answered immediately. He's managed only four appearances for Man City since signing earlier this season.
