Hopefully these buses can be implemented all over the country soon. However, expecting that to be completed before the next 2-3 years would be naive.
Blah blah blah, as Greta Thunberg, quoted, is all we hear from world leader. She demands, on behalf of her generation and the future, that governments act now.
As I travel in one of a handful of electric buses purchased by the Goa(India) government, her recent speech plays in my mind. There is no engine sound to distact me. Inside the bus, there's complete silence apart from the soft crackling sound of the fiber interiors as the bus travels over potholed road. The diver, wearing an unconventional green uniform, is driving with ease. He has no gear shaft to move and no clutch to stomp on. He has a screen, a first for government buses in Goa, at his side showing him live video of the surrounding traffic.
As we pass other diesel buses I'm reminded of how noisy and smoky they are. I paid 5 rupees more than the usual fair of Rs 45 to travel in this quite and clean electric bus. Is this how our Government thinks they can mitigate climate change? By replacing a fraction of buses with electric and charging more?
Ok, my electric bus has air conditioning so a higher price compared to non AC buses is justified. I ditched my car for this journey especially since petrol prices in Goa hit 100 per litre for the first time in history. But i would gladly abandon my car anyday if I get to travel where i want to go, when I want to go, in this electric bus.
Why isnt every bus an electric bus? Why is the government not serious about replacing every diesel bus with electric all at once? It's not a naive question. It's one of those questions that will determine our very survival. Yes, we do also need solar panels covering every bus terminus so that these electric buses are not powered by dirty coal.
Ask your local representative, are we replacing all our public buses with electrical in next 2 years? Do not accept the reply blah blah blah.
