Eddie Nketiah triumphed over his peers in a dominant display against Sheffield United, netting three excellent goals; a rare goal for Tomiyasu and a penalty for Fabio Vieira capped off a remarkable performance.
He hasn’t always had the best of times in an Arsenal shirt regarding consistency, however, if he can perform the way he did in that match most games then the sky is the limit for him. Facing competition with Gabriel Jesus has not been easy, with the starting position never recognised as his own in this side thus far. However, with Jesus seemingly out for a few weeks and Nketiah firing, it is hard to make a case that he shouldn’t be given an extended run in the side.
Key stats:
•Eddie scored with all three of his shots, registering 100% accuracy. Clinical finishes that left the Fodderingham helpless each time
•He won 4/8 ground duels, which was more than all but two of his teammates (Martinelli with 6 and joint with White). He was defensively involved, constantly pressing the defence and goalkeeper
•He won 3 fouls, showing how quick on his feet he can be when attacking and direct.
Final thoughts:
One particular skill that Nketiah has demonstrated in previous games is his ability to turn his marker and wriggle away with ferocious pace. Against defenders that didn’t seem to know how to mark his movement tight enough, he was allowed to excel at his strengths and punished Sheffield United for it.
Despite his show stopping performance, many are still not convinced due to the inconsistency that he has displayed in many big games where he has been the starting striker, most recently the 2:2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur where he was virtually nullified by their defence. It remains to be seen how he will perform in the Carabao Cup (presuming he does) and against Newcastle United away, but promising signs for Eddie Nketiah who needs to grab his chance and run with it to really give Arteta a long-term headache.
