On Tuesday, the Dominion Voting Systems' lawsuit against Fox News began in a landmark defamation case that will determine whether the network can be held financially liable for publishing the false claim that voting machines rigged the 2020 election. Dominion Voting Systems sued Fox News Networks and Fox Corporation, the parent company, in 2021, seeking $1.6 billion in damages and challenging the claims made by hosts and guests on Fox News and Fox Business and by host Lou Dobbs on social media. The voting equipment manufacturer claims that Fox News defamed it when the network broadcast baseless claims that it was tied to the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, that it paid kickbacks to politicians, and that its machines "rigged" the 2020 presidential election. Dominion has already proven in court that the claims are baseless, and the judge will instruct the jury that the claims are false. The trial is expected to last for five to six weeks, and the jurors will remain anonymous, identified only by numbers.
