Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has often stated that privacy is “a fundamental human right.” The company has, over the years, taken a high moral ground and claimed that unlike other companies it would protect users from violation of their privacy even from the governments.
Those claims are true even now, but with Apple’s iCloud Plus announcement recently, privacy is a right that you buy from Apple. Many critics are wondering if Apple fought so hard for privacy only to win the trust of its consumers and then sell protection of privacy as a premium service. The company’s upgraded iCloud storage includes a service that keeps the user’s Web-browsing history from being accessed even by its maker, Apple. Users could also hide their email address. Its service called Private Relay encrypts the traffic coming and going from your device.
If you are opening a mail from any of the app devices, its privacy features will hide your device’s IP address and the spam mailers cannot trace your online activity. This could also hide your location. But users of Apple in countries like China cannot hide because of local regulatory issues.
One feature that has excited man is Apple’s ‘App Privacy Report’ according to which it will update the Apple device users to know when an app on your phone used your camera, photos, location or microphone. This feature could leave many app designers to be more responsible for the app’s activities. [https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/06/07/wwdc-apple-live-updates/]
Apple, while releasing new updates to its phones and other features recently, said that its enhanced privacy features will win the trust of more consumers, even if they have to pay for some features.
