Detox diets are all the craze after festive seasons and special occasions. A lot of people follow these diets to "DETOX" their bodies or wash off the guilt of over-indulgence. BUT are detox diets really necessary? Let's know more;
The term "Toxin" is extremely contextual, anything in excess can cause toxicity in human body like pollutants, synthetic chemicals, heavy metals & ultra-processed foods etc. Detoxification is the physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from the body. A healthy body has its own mechanism to flush out toxins with help of organs like liver, kidneys, colon, skin and lungs etc.
Majority of the detox diets claim to eliminate toxins and rapid weight loss through restrictive diet protocols like juices, smoothies along with other supplements. But none could provide a clear-cut list of the toxins being eliminated. It's like selling solutions to a problem that they are not sure about.
Medically, you need detoxification only when you have acute toxicity of poison, drugs. You might experience short-term weight loss (not fat loss) from a detox diet due to calorie restriction, but most of it is glycogen and water, which will come rushing back once you resume eating regular food.
