Woah 😳
Do you love me? Is probably one of the most dangerous question you could ever ask someone. And this is why.
When you ask a person, "Do you love me?" You're requesting verbal confirmation of their love. This is usually because you already feel unloved. You're feeling lonely. You believe that the things they do, do not adequately express their love for you, so you seek verbal confirmation. However, as soon as that person says I love you, you will lose trust in them because you will think, well, maybe you're just saying I love you because I asked you. In other words, when you ask, "Do you really love me?" you've put yourself in an impossible situation. You're forcing them to make a statement that, even if it's true, you'll find suspicious.
This is referred to as hysteria in Lacanian psychoanalysis. The radical questioning of your relationship with someone else, and, more importantly, the authenticity of their relationship, is referred to as hysteria. And it unravels once you start scratching at it. It only gets worse. You must have trust and love because you cannot have it confirmed.
