Do you know India still has the highest burden of tuberculosis in the world and has missed the WHO end milestone .
Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health issue in India, causing around 220,000 deaths annually. India has the highest TB burden in the world, with about 3 million cases, including 2 million new cases each year. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that India accounts for 27% of the world's 10 million TB cases and 25% of the 1.6 million deaths.
The country had pledged to end tuberculosis (TB) by 2025, five years ahead of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) target of 2030. However now India seems to have been missing the deadlines .
According to a latest report published in Lancet India failed to meet 2020 deadline by WHO inspite of drop in its incidence by 0.5 between 2015 and 2020.
The WHO end TB strategy aims for
90 percent reduction in TB deaths and an 80 percent reduction in the incidence rate by 2030 compared to base line figures of 2015
