Ever wondered what if you received a letter and it turns out to be a treasure in your depository.
India besides being a country rich in multi- layered cultures and religious and spiritual activities it is also a huge landmass with vast varieties of things that you might not know about her.
A world where individuals are immersed in slipping their fingers in text messages and memes, there exists a little glacial post office at a height of about 15,500 feet above sea level, crowning itself as the Worlds “Highest post office”. The world highest post office opened in 1983 and is located in the Hikkim village, which dwindles itself in the dry, cold and arid Himalayan valley of Spiti.
India can not only boast of the world’s highest post office and largest postal network in the world but also of the fact that worlds first airmail flight also took place right here in India, on February 18, 1911.
Hikkim being a very small town and a town with a population barely in hundreds has only this old and classic post office and tender and affectionate people in a cold landscape to welcome you. Rinchen Chhering has been the branch postmaster here since its commencement. It’s been 29 years since he has been rendering his services to this post office and continues to do so.
There is no cell phone or internet to connect with, therefore people out there happily satisfy themselves with the old traditional method of letter writing in order to connect with their family, friends and loved ones. Like the rest of the valley, the world’s highest post office remains shut for six months of the year because of heavy snowfall it encounters.
People come here from all around the world to write a letter and send them for delivery from this vantage and star down point. Some also post letters back to their hometown in order to receive the prestigious stamp on these postcards.
I would be dumbstruck if I was ever to receive a letter from a quiet and tranquil corner of the world:World’s highest post office.
