Also, regarding the show where all the characters behave in morally appropriate ways (which may be boring), just one word and a number. Brooklyn 99. Not boring at all
Although Friends was certainly wretched in many aspects, the point of a lot of the bad behaviour was…to show that the behaviour was bad. It was not always because the show itself was problematic.
Take Joey’s obsession with finding a pretty roommate. The joke in-universe is that yes, Joey is shallow and obsessed with sex. This has always been the joke! The joke is not on his female roommates for not wanting sexual relationships with Joey. The show does not claim that ‘women are only for sex’ with a straight face. That is not something that the writers of the show want us to believe in any real way. The target of the ridicule is Joey.
He is not a perfect character. None of them are! Imagine watching a show where the characters all behaved only in morally appropriate ways. It would be incredibly boring I think.
So when we watch a show where, say, the serial killer goes on a rampage, we need to understand the difference between the show *depicting* murder and *endorsing* it.
