Kapil Juneja is a urologist and andrologist in Delhi. As a surgeon, his work mainly involved treating patients with critical illnesses.
"There were fewer patients of our speciality, and even if there were some patients, they had a fear of getting infected from Covid if they came to the hospital, so most of them avoided the treatment during the pandemic unless it was an emergency," he said.
He connected with India Cares and decided to provide selfless service to the patients by giving online consultations.
"Most of my work during COVID was based on online consultation on WhatsApp or other mediums; patients needed guidance so they could prevent themselves by taking precautions and few doses of medicines," he said.
Dr Juneja had a lot to talk about medical infrastructure that failed during the pandemic."Medical infrastructure in our country needs to be upgraded; at least the speciality hospitals should be separated from the general hospital, where all types of patients are treated."
Due to improper management and scarcity of hospital beds and other medical care, COVID patients were admitted even in speciality hospitals, which treated some acute diseases; this led to the compromise of other patients health.
He also added,"Cancer care, dialysis care has been compromised a lot because of the pandemic, as all hospitals were occupied patients avoided to take a treatment."
Amidst the uncertainty of the third wave and what may happen in future, Dr Juneja said, "we should be prepared for every difficulty that may come next, which could be changed with proper management in the medical care."
