The threat from Covid-19 has gripped the football fraternity with a seemingly disaster knocking across the world. Several players in Europe have tested positive for Covid-19 as the teams head into the crucial half of the season. LaLiga remains among the worst-affected leagues in the continent.
Current LaLiga leaders Real Madrid have suffered a massive blow in the title race with four first-team players contracting the novel coronavirus. The statement released by the Bernabeu outfit read, “Real Madrid C. F. communicates that our players (Thibaut) Courtois, (Federico) Valverde, (Eduardo) Camavinga, and Vinicius Jr. have tested positive for COVID-19.”
Manager Carlo Ancelotti now faces a daunting task ahead of his side’s away clash against Getafe on Sunday when the team returns after a week-long break. The absence of Courtois, the first choice between the sticks and Vinicus Jr, the second-highest scorer this season could be detrimental.
However, Los Blancos are not the only team to be hit by the Covid wave in LaLiga. Defending Spanish league champions Atletico Madrid recently confirmed that manager Diego Simeone and striker Antoine Griezmann have tested Covid positive. The two were asymptomatic and have been isolated. They now join the Rojiblancos bench alongside Koke, Hector Herrera and Joao Felix. Meanwnile, Atletico Madrid host Rayo Vallecano on Sunday at Wanda Metropolitano.
Elsewhere, Barcelona, the worst performing side this season among their arch-rivals, now have tougher times ahead. Xavi hasn’t had the kind of reception he’d have expected with at least 10 players contracting the virus in the first team. Sergiño Dest, Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembélé, Samuel Umtiti, Gavi, Jordi Alba, Alejandro Balde, Clement Lenglet and Dani Alves are the major players in the list. Hence, their game against Mallorca on Sunday could be stuck in limbo.
