read it.
I just started reading The City Of Djinns by William Dalrymble, recommend to me by my friend manika_marwah
A few pages in, I like how the mystical ties through concrete Delhi descriptors — from the anticipation of what can be found in each corner of the city, the heat of summer spices to the humidity of September, that materialize you into the previously unknown.
A short description of jinns penned by the narrator: "He said that when the world was new and Allah had created mankind from clay, he also made another race, like us in all things, but fashioned from fire. The djinns were spirits, invisible to the naked eye; to see them you had to fast and pray.”
There do seem to be some moments laced with a western gaze, though I’m just a few pages in.
Despite being in Delhi while reading it, this book makes me nostalgic for something I can’t pinpoint yet.
