Gabriel Boric is all of 35, and he will soon take over as Chile’s President. In fact he will be the country youngest-ever president after he won a presidential runoff on Sunday.
Jose Antonio Kast, the incumbent, was often compared to former US President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for his right-wing policies. Boric was on the other end of the spectrum. His victory has also signalled a significant shift in the politics of the South American continent—the Left is on the rise. Pedro Castillo, a union activist from a Marxist party was the last winner in the region when he won the presidential elections in Peru, defeating a right-wing candidate a few months back. The vote was one against rising disparity. (https://www.dw.com/en/peru-elections-leftist-castillo-claims-election-victory-despite-right-wing-pushback/a-57914494)
Latin America could be witnessing a 'Pink Tide' and it is growing deep in colour with each passing general election in the region.
Colombia and Brazil are other countries which are currently under centrist or right-wing governments, but the leftists are on the rise. Countries like Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, and Bolivia have already done it. (https://america.cgtn.com/2021/06/23/right-wing-governments-see-setbacks-throughout-latin-america)
According to experts in the region, the right-wing governments have failed to deliver on their promises and Covid-19 has also paid a role in it with the disparities rising. The handling of the Covid crisis could also be a reason. More than 25 million have been infected and it has left nearly a million dead.
The region is suffering from inflation, joblessness, and rise in crime. President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro has been on a slippery slope. The man likely to challenge next year is Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who served as president from 2003 to 2011.
