Many of Football's great teams and clubs are from Europe. But, South America has always proved football is not just about machinised movements and structured formations. While another successful season ends, with three major football world cups played in it, South America stands as Champions in all three - Senior men's World Cup, U20 world Cup, Olympics and U17 world cup.
U20 World Cup
Most recently, Uruguay won the U20 World Cup beating Italy 1-0. Reaching the final with strong performances, organized play and scoring 16 goals, Italy failed to register a shot on target.
12 titles won by South American teams, out of 23 finals. Argentina won it 6 times, Brazil 5 and Uruguay once. European countries have won it 8 times.
U17 World Cup
The present U17 World Cup winners are Brazil. In the 2019 Tournament, they beat Mexico at home 2-1 in the final. This was Brazil's 4th title in this format. Any other South American team has won it. Nigeria are the most successful team in the competition with 5 titles. European countries have won on 4 occasions.
Olympics
Brazil has managed to win Gold medals in two consecutive Olympics Men's football competitions. In Tokyo, Brazil beat Spain in the final for a score of 2-1.
Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina have won the gold medals 2 times each.
FIFA World Cup
Qatar showed some dramatic matches, where Argentina won their third World Cup. Super player Messi leading from the front, ensured they come back into the competition after a stumble start and take home the prestigious trophy beating France in a thrilling final.
Out of the 22 final tournaments, Brazil have won 5 titles, Argentina 3 and Uruguay 2. 12 times European countries have won the trophy, thanks to Italy(4) and Germany(4).
Most of the countries who try to improve their football follow European football. But, the success of South American countries in the big stage and in big clubs points to something else - Football needs to be played as a game, instead of performing as a program.
