It’s not new for the Premier League to witness underdogs playing attractive football that make their fans happy. The likes of Southampton under Hassenhutl(now relegated) and Leeds under Bielsa are the most recent examples. Brighton, although their long-term seems safe now might be under a similar track. Their team is flying high with Mitoma, Caicedo, Ferguson, and MacAllister whom all are under the radar of the big 6(or big 7 if Newcastle is included). What should Brighton do to sustain this golden period of their club while their roster would be decimated by the big 7’s wealth?
Continue to look at player-profiles and manager-profiles that are set in stone in the club’s culture. This is what Brighton already do. When Marc Cucurella was sold, they already had Estupinan under the sights. When Graham Potter was poached by Chelsea, De Zerbi was already eyed as the replacement in no time. Brighton continue to plan for their possible future departures. This needs to be continued even when some decisions don’t go their way because it isn’t about the outcome, rather it is about the process. Just because some decisions go wrong doesn’t mean the approach of Brighton is wrong. Crystal Palace sacked Viera when a string of bad performances occurred despite there was a good fixture run coming but that is bound to happen for any manager. Even if De Zerbi goes through the same, the club needs to back him atleast until the end of a season.
While chasing the european spots, most underdog premier league run out of gas the second or third season. Sheffield United, West Ham, Wolves, Everton under Moyes, etc. are examples of the same. The competitive levels, and the pressure while vying for those European spots take a toll on the players they might have not previously witnessed. Keeping that in mind, Brighton need to plan their transfers. With signings of Dahoud from Dortumund and Milner from Liverpool, it seems like Brighton are under that direction. Nonetheless, this needs to continue well into the subsequent transfer windows even if these transfers don’t work.
