Yes, BREASTFEEDING can reduce the risk of BREAST CANCER! But how does it work?
Overexposure to Estrogen is linked to breast cancer. Pregnancy and breastfeeding stop your periods, thus reducing your exposure to Estrogen in your lifetime. This can lower your risk of developing breast cancer. In fact, for every 12 months a woman breastfeeds, there's a 4.3% reduction in the relative risk of breast cancer! Breast cancer can be attributed to a variety of factors - some we control while most we don't. But in one particular study, it was found that women who breastfed demonstrated a 14% lower risk for developing breast cancer than women who never did. Prolonged absence of periods can lower your exposure to estrogen over your lifetime, which is believed to be associated with an increased risk of the disease. Other than breast cancer, it has also been linked to a reduced chance of developing ovarian cancer!
