I recently read (Pune pulse) about the Bhimashankar Wildlife Reserve in Maharashtra during the monsoon season and was captivated by a rare natural wonder—bioluminescence. This 131-square-kilometer forest is home to the endangered Indian Giant Squirrel and unique reptile species. But what amazed me was the glowing spectacle that appeared at night after heavy rainfall.
The phenomenon occurs due to Mycena, a fungus with microscopic mushrooms that emit light when combined with moisture. The trees seemed to glow with a vivid, fluorescent green. This magical display happens in secluded areas like the village of Ahupe.
Though it's not an everyday occurrence, those fortunate enough to visit during the monsoon months of July, August, and September may witness this enchanting display. Exploring the glowing forest was an unforgettable experience that left me in awe of nature's wonders.
