This Christmas, TranSanta is coming to town.
A project by Pose star and activist Indya Moore, TranSanta invites people to be Santa for trans and intersex youth who are homeless, in foster care, or otherwise unable to access gifts this holiday season.
“My friends and I want to make sure that trans kids feel like they are a gift to this world because they are,” Moore said in an Instagram video.
The idea came in response to the violence and attacks against the community, Pink News reports, at the end of the deadliest year on record for trans and gender-diverse people.
Moore and ACLU Staff Attorney Chase Stangio tapped into the community’s shared love, connection, and resilience to support the youngest.
“TranSanta is a space where trans youth who are least likely to be seen as deserving of love, have access to it,” said Moore, in a conversation with Strangio.
Trans youth with supportive families experience a 52 percent decrease in recent suicidal ideation, research shows.
“I didn’t have a chimney growing up in the Bronx or in foster care, but I do have my community now,” Moore said.
The pandemic has exacerbated unsafe conditions for trans youth who are houseless, in foster care, detention centers, and abusive situations, TranSanta states.
Over 50 bills targeting trans youth’s access to healthcare, bathrooms and athletics were introduced in the 2020 U.S. legislative sessions.
Almost 2 percent of U.S. high school students are transgender, according to CDC, which means there are over 1.3 million trans youth under the age of 17.
“Trans kids, trans youth - I see you,” Moore said. “I am you.”
The TranSanta account has letters, illustrations and photos by trans youth, with corresponding links that lead to a Target wish list by the letter’s sender.
“Acceptance and love are gifts we all deserve all year,” Moore said.
