Barcelona were knocked out of Champions League group stages for the first time in 17 years and will now have to settle for Europa League football - The second division of European Club football competition. It will be a new low for the team from Catalonia, but its a making of their own.
10 years ago, Barcelona put up one of the best displays at Wembley when they thumped Manchester United in the final of the Champions League. 10 years since that day, poor decisions in the boardroom have led to shambles on the football pitch.
Former player, and now manager, Xavi accepted the challenge in his post match comments.
"It has to be a turning point to change the dynamics, to change many things. We have not competed, this is the Champions League and now the Europa League is coming, we will face it with all the dignity in the world.", said the legendary midfielder.
Barcelona are currently 7th in La Liga, 16 points behind league leaders and arch rivals, Real Madrid and 6 points behind 4th placed Athletico Madrid.
Having been knocked out of the Champions League, Barcelona need to step up to ensure they qualify for next season's Champions League. Winning the Europa League could be one way, but it'll be no easy feat, especially with UEL specialists Sevilla also getting knocked out of the Champions League after Matchday 6.
Barcelona need to take a step back after this setback if they are to revive the fakous club and get back to the heights their manager and his teammates strived and worked hard for.
