Cookies with rainbow colours. Bagels in various colours. Grilled cheese in rainbow colours. Challah in rainbow colours. We can't seem to get enough of rainbow food lately.
However, it turns out that the obsession with those red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple stripes is not new. Australia has long been a fan of multicoloured foods, thanks to a little snack known as "fairy bread."
Despite the name, Australian fairy bread is just a delicious 3-ingredient treat: a slice of bread spread with butter and covered in, wait for it, rainbow sprinkles.
It is, in fact, unusually simple. "Fairy bread is a basic food," says Lorraine Elliott, an Australian food blogger and cookbook author. "It's typically made with white bread spread with butter and then what we call 'hundreds and thousands,' or colourful, round sprinkles."
