Once again, Arsenal look set to receive an apology from the PGMOL after losing to Newcastle by a debatable goal, for numerous reasons. Despite feeling aggrieved, the overall performance was not quite there and the Gunners could not force the error from a stubborn Newcastle defence.
Player ratings:
Raya: 6 - didn’t have much to do, was poor for the goal conceded
Tomiyasu: 6.5 - good first half, quieter second half but his versatility is a blessing in this Arsenal team
Gabriel: 6 - shaky at times, should’ve done better for the goal conceded, not his best game
Saliba: 7 - arguably one of the better players on the pitch, didn’t do much wrong and retained possession well when he looked certain to lose it
White: 6 - honestly didn’t notice him too much, defended well but couldn’t get involved with Saka like they usually do
Jorginho: 7 - quietly had a good game, absorbed pressure well compared to other matches, still reluctant to move forward as much though
Rice: 7.5 - best player on the pitch tonight, seemed to be the only Arsenal player forcing the issue and passionate to win this match. Unfortunately, one player wasn’t enough though and he’ll feel incredibly frustrated
Havertz: 6.5 - seemed much better when shifted to the left, managed to get three Newcastle players booked in the space of a minute. Other than that though, not much to report on
Martinelli: 5 - looked incredibly timid and reluctant to take someone on, wasn’t the usual energetic player that we have seen
Nketiah: 3 - not much to add, held the ball well sometimes, largely invisible
Saka: 5 - exactly the same as Martinelli, timid and lacklustre performance. Then again, he was relentless fouled so
Vieira: 5
Trossard: 5.5
Zinchenko: 5.5
Overall a disappointing performance from the Gunners, but objectively they deserved a point from a very scrappy game against a side that were lucky to have 11 men.
