An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 on the Richter Scale hit Seoni, Madhya Pradesh at 8:02 pm on Wednesday as reported by the National Centre for Seismology.
The strongest earthquake ever, to my knowledge was recorded in Chile, which had a magnitude of 9.5 on the Richter scale. Valdivia earthquake.
The Richter scale is a logarithmic scale used to measure the magnitude of earthquakes. Each whole number increase on the Richter scale represents a tenfold increase in the amplitude of seismic waves recorded by seismographs.
The scale is open-ended, meaning there is theoretically no upper limit to the magnitude of an earthquake, although practical limitations usually confine measurements to about 9.0 or so.
This scale was developed by Charles Richter in 1935.
