A recent survey by Adecco Group, one of the largest on AI, shows that 41% of executives at major companies globally expect to shrink their workforce due to AI in the next five years.
This comes as AI, like generative AI for creating text and images, becomes more common. While some see it as streamlining tasks, others worry about job losses.
CEO Denis Machuel said AI impacts almost all jobs, creating and eliminating them. He noted a shift from past fears about digital tech to a more balanced view.
The survey covered 18 industries across nine countries, including both white-collar and blue-collar jobs. This differs from a previous poll where half of companies thought AI would create new jobs.
Recent layoffs in tech firms like Google and Microsoft, focusing on AI chatbots, show the real impact. Even non-tech companies like Dropbox and Duolingo cite AI in downsizing.
Goldman Sachs economists warned earlier that generative AI could affect 300 million jobs globally, especially white-collar ones. The Adecco survey suggests this may happen in five years.
