Disney always manages to nail it.
It's good that they're trying to change the narrative. Sugar coating and overly romanticizing movies are outdated.
On that note, found this really interesting article: https://www.insider.com/moments-themes-in-disney-movies-that-havent-aged-well-problematic
It’s interesting to see a change in the stories that Disney has been pushing out in the last couple of years. Most of Disney’s movies involve a happy character that encounters a villain who wants to destroy everything that the protagonist stands for. This cliché plot has been an essential part of most Disney movies and has given them millions of dollars.
However, they are now looking at things through a different angle. Starting with Maleficent, Disney is trying to introduce characters that aren’t the most perfect in terms of their behaviour or actions . They are shifting the identity of a protagonist to something real however, the story line still remains the same, with a happy ending, irrespective of who the main chareer is. I think that it’s an interesting move, simply because it will be more believable for the children. Pushing for the anti-hero does show an interesting twist to what we expect of off Disney. The new Disney movie ‘Cruella’ is a perfect example of what I’m trying to convey. By giving children the perspective of a villain may help them look at things in their life with a different viewpoint.
In a world so divided, it is interesting to see that there is a ray of hope. The introduction of reason and two sided stories, could help the future generation in looking at topics holistically, rather than just the elements that benefit their ideologies and agenda.
