That was a really interesting and informative read!
The one-child policy was a rule implemented by the Chinese government as a method of controlling the population mandating that the vast majority of couples in the country could only have one child. The rule was introduced in 1979 and phased out in 2015. Now, the intentions might be pure, but as a human, isn’t it quite cruel?
What is wrong with the One-Child Policy?
1. China Forced Killing- It created mandatory contraception and sterilization policies as part of the one child policy in China. The men were much luckier, often being told to pay a fine for their activities instead.
2. Declining Gender Ratio- This policy created a disparity in the gender ratio at birth in China. There are 30 million more men than women in this generation of Chinese citizens, which could create significant socioeconomic issues for their country. The reason for this disparity was a desire to have boys, because of course, “they earn the livelihood”.
3. China is Indifferent to Feelings- Many parents had to give up their children for adoption or abandon them.Unfortunately, adoption of daughters accounted for more than 50% of the “missing girls” that were not on census documents in the country. The children in orphanages couldn’t even imagine a home.
UN Says-
It is true that the government has a say in the social planning needs of their nation. There is also a need for these representatives to protect the rights that we feel are fundamental to the human experience. Since 1968, the United Nations has declared that family planning and reproductive rights, including how many children to have, should be part of each household’s decision-making process.
Instead of looking at ways to encourage parents to be responsible with their family planning needs, the Chinese government forced the process on would-be parents. By not allowing parents to make the best possible decision for their household, China could arguably be in violation of this agreement.
It bothers me how such inhumanity was allowed to continue over decades. Human Rights are the basic rights, and everyone, each and everyone should have the right to exercise them.
