Sanskrit as Link Language and Devanagiri as Common Script continues...
Nehru himself continued to pretend reverence for Sanskrit. While speaking on a Private Member’s Bill in 1959, Nehru inter alia said that people grew from their roots. India had a history of 5,000 to 10,000 years. Language was a symbol of continuity. The language to which most Indian languages were connected was Sanskrit. But it was lip service. In reality Nehru sabotaged the cause of Sanskrit.
In fact, Sanskrit has made a most significant contribution to the development of all the Indian languages. With the exception of the four major languages of the South, almost all the major Indian languages had their source and derived their sustenance from Sanskrit. The languages of the South also had a large part of their vocabulary derived from Sanskrit.
The greatest resistance to Hindi being made the official language of the Union of India was based on the ground that it would mean an inbuilt advantage to those having Hindi as their mother tongue and put the others at a disadvantage. If Sanskrit is made today the official language, it will have several advantages:
1. Since Sanskrit is not the mother tongue in any State or for any group of people, it will provide an even playing field to everyone with equal advantages or disadvantages. If anything, it could have been more welcome in the South where there were many more Sanskrit scholars than elsewhere.
2. Sanskrit is a more scientific and phonetic language. As recent studies have shown, it is also the most computer-friendly.
3. Sanskrit literature is one of the richest in the world.
4. As the official language, Sanskrit will become the greatest cementing force for national unity and integration, of languages and conservation, in promotion of renaissance of Indian culture and values.
5. Sanskrit was accepted as the mother of all the languages in what philology refers to as the Indo-European Group of Languages. A large number of words in the modern European languages are derived from Sanskrit.
