Preface continues...
It has not only a geographical unity, but it has over and above all a deeper and much more fundamental unity—the indubitable cultural unity that cover the land from end to end.
Dr. Ambedkar said 90 years ago what is most relevant to say today. He understood and had the courage and erudition to say that the British had manipulated our history to suit their ends. Following Ambedkar thus, the identity of an Indian is constituted by his adherence to norms of Hindu civilization, acceptance of sanskrit as the ultimate link language, individualism in the pursuit of spiritual happiness, being committed to the equality of souls and the law of karma.
In 1947, the nation had no doubt inherited a host of dehumanizing features such as poverty, communal antagonisms, and human bondage of various kinds. Human capital in the form of dedicated, tested leadership and a heightened mass consciousness had been accumulated during the freedom struggle. But since then, because of the policies and programmes adopted by the government and the political culture of the parties in power, this human capital has now been largely depleted. The inherited dehumanizing features have become further entrenched. The moral fibre of Indian society thus is weaker today than it was in 1947. That is the biggest inducement for terrorists to attack at will.
A society based on dharma is, therefore, vitally needed at this moment in our history, because there is a dimension to the current national crisis—namely, the moral decay and the decline of character in our society which, if not stemmed, will slowly poison to death our nation. This decay and decline is visible in every aspect of our life—politicians defecting for office and cash, bureaucrats taking bribes, teachers selling exam questions, students passing by cheating, businessmen adulterating products, lawyers cheating clients, doctors betraying their patients, etc..
