Dragon’s Teeth and Dragon’s Brain continues...
The strategic missile and nuclear realities are such that there is great
Sino-Indian disparity in this field. For practical geo-strategic reasons,
China’s major nuclear and missile resources are located in Tibet. These
are mainly in the Amdo region of north-east Tibet, outside the Tibet
Autonomous Region, in China’s Qinghai province.
The major locations are the research establishment (the PLA’s
‘Ninth Academy’) in the Haiyen county of the Habei Tibetan
Autonomous Prefecture, connected by rail to Lanzou, another major
nuclear facility in the neighbouring Gansu province, and the Da
Tsaidam and Xiao Tsaidam missile deployment sites in the Tsaidam
basin in Qinghai Province, in the Tibetan ethno-cultural area known to
native Tibetan speakers as Amdo. Other nuclear strategic missile
locations are Delingha (37.6 deg. North, 97.12 deg. East), 200 km
south-east of Da Tsaidam and closer to India, and Nagchuka, north of
Lhasa, and 500 km south of the Tsaidam basin, and thus even closer to
India. From these nuclear missiles can reach any spot in India. In
addition, there are numerous non-nuclear tactical missile sites much
closer to the Indian border.
China’s missile forces function directly under the CMC, through
the PLARF HQ, and are not operationally under the Theatre
Command HQ in whose area they may be located. Known Chinese
missile forces that dominate India are located as under:
Missile Base 62: Base MUCD No. 96201 HQ at Kunming, Yunnan Province, with its 622 Missile Brigade (MUCD No.
96213) located at Yuxi city, Yunnan (DF-21 missiles), 621 Missile
Brigade (MUCD No. 96211 at Xibin, Honghe Jianshui, Yunnan
(DF-3A missiles), and Luijiho (623 Brigade). These launch sites can
cover part of northern India.
l Missile Base 64: MUCD No. 96351. HQ at Xining, Qinghai
Province. Missile Base 64 is the controlling HQ for the Delingha-Da
Qaidam launch sites at the north-eastern edge of the Amdo region.
Missile brigades located at Datong (642 Brigade) (DF-3A missiles),
Delingha-Da Qaidam (643 Brigade) of which the Delingha launch
sites can cover all of northern India.
