Prologue continues....
Indira Gandhi, the daughter of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, was a legend.
She was brave, determined, tenacious, unforgiving, tough, aristocratic and
disdainful of small minds. She empathized with the people; they loved her. She was very much a part of the mainstream cultural traditions and
secular to the core. She brought glory to the country; she helped it to rediscover its manliness. Of course she had strong and uncompromising
critics. They said she was authoritarian and intolerant.
But nature has not designed man to be perfect. Indira Gandhi served the nation well and she died in the service of the nation. She did not deserve this death. But the design of destiny is always an enigma. The history of India had once again become blood-stained.
With the passing of Indira Gandhi, an eventful age came to an end in India’s history – reminding us once again of the tryst we made with destiny long years ago and of the pledges to be redeemed. Like an elegy, the memories of this leader fill the Indian mind with wistfulness and a deep sense of loss.
