4. Club experiences
After starting his professional career in 2002 with Mohun Bagan, Chhetri transferred to JCT, where he amassed 21 goals in 48 appearances. At the 59th Santosh Trophy competition held in Delhi, Sunil was a member of the Delhi squad. In the competition, he scored six goals, including a hat-trick against Gujarat. In the quarterfinal encounter against Kerala, Delhi lost, and he scored again.
In 2010, he joined the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer, becoming the third notable player from the subcontinent to play abroad. He played for Chirag United and Mohun Bagan in the I-League when he returned to India, and then he went back to Europe to play for Sporting CP's reserve team in the Primeira Liga.
5. Current performance and play
It cannot be denied that Sunil Chhetri is one of the greatest possessions of the country.
Even at the age of 38, he is playing as a forward and is the captain of Bengaluru FC (Indian Super League, ISL), and the Indian National Team.
He is recognized as the best Indian football player of all time and is renowned for his leadership, teamwork, and link-up play. He has earned the most caps for the Indian national team and has scored the most goals overall.
He is the third-highest international goalscorer among active players, after only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
All the Indian fans should understand how big of a deal it is for someone like him to actively post on his social media, time and again to request people to fill the stadium as they are so empty. It is a huge source of de-motivation and disappointment when the players look at empty stands.
Let’s hope that there is some positive change in this scene.
Stay tuned.
