Our country has a long and lovable sporting heritage. In several sports, we have produced some of the best athletes. On the international level, we have distinguished ourselves greatly.
Sunil Chhetri, the captain of the Indian football team, must nevertheless use social media before every game to implore supporters to pack the stadium and cheer on their country's football team. It is in and of itself a complete disdain and scorn for the athletes who compete in our colors.
While playing Oman in a World Cup qualifying match, the captain of our football team had no choice but to appeal to the crowd to show up. That demonstrates our lack of interest in, faith in, and trust in our football squad and is upsetting and discouraging.
Following are a few reasons why Sunil Chettri deserves full respect from his fans.
1. His feats for the Indian nation
Chhetri contributed to India's victories in 2011, 2015, and 2021 SAFF Championships, as well as the Nehru Cup in 2007, 2009, and 2012. Also, by scoring twice in the championship match in 2011, he assisted India in winning the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, which earned them a spot in the AFC Asian Cup for the first time in 27 years.
In addition, Chhetri received a record seven AIFF Player of the Year awards in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018-19, and 2021–22.
In recognition of his great sports accomplishments, Chhetri was given the Arjuna Award in 2011 and the Padma Shri Award in 2019, India's fourth-highest civilian honor. He became the first football player to get India's highest sports distinction, the Khel Ratna Award, in 2021.
