Eastern Arunachal Pradesh : The Battle of Walong continues....
On 14th November, ‘D’ Coy 4th Sikh and two companies of 6th Kumaon were launched into an attack to dislodge the Chinese from two tactically important features named Green Pimple and Yellow
Pimple respectively. The attacks failed; the Kumaonis being beaten back just 50 m from the crest of the Yellow Pimple feature.
The Chinese counter-offensive which began thereafter on 16th November on both sides of the Lohit River forced the brigade to retreat in some disorder
through very difficult terrain.
The official ‘History’ is critical of the ‘over-eagerness to execute an “offensive defense” plan’ that ‘led to the collapse of the front.’ It adds, ‘. . .the offensive was started on 14th November without knowing correctly the strength of the enemy and without the concentration of his own troops on the launching pad to the required level of strength. It is surmised that undue haste in launching this assault, without making a firm base and without catering for the likely reaction by the enemy, was made in order to complete it on 14th November, so as to make it a gift to Prime Minister Nehru on his birthday. The assault so launched not only failed but it boomeranged.’ Nevertheless, it must be noted that this was the only sector in which an offensive action was undertaken.
