Chapter 2 Continues…
The All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) secessionist Ahmedshah Geelani, who claims to represent the people of Jammu and Kashmiri, had earlier said much the same to the media: “If Indian soldiers could play a role in the birth of Bangladesh, what was wrong with Pakistani soldiers playing a role in the independence of Kashmir?”
This goal of wrecking India’s integrity was first pursued by Pakistan in Punjab in the early 1980s. Pakistan sought the creation of an independent ‘Khalistan’ hoping not only to dismember India, but create buffer for Pakistan. But Pakistan failed in Punjab at a cost of nearly 25,000 Indian lives, including ultimately that of Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Having thus been in vain, Pakistan since 1989 has focused its energies on Kashmir and other border states of India with the same primary goal—to dismember India. Already about 40,000 have died, and nearly 500,000 Kashmiris (Hindus) have been driven out of the State of Jammu and Kashmir into refugee camps.
Definition of Terrorism in India
Based on the perception in the above five dimensions we venture to define terrorism as we experience it in India. In India, terrorism today is defined as premeditated politically motivated and/or religiously-inspired violence perpetrated against non-combatant target population, primarily those of Hindu faith, by clandestine agents to secure compliance by intimidation, to overawe the Hindu civilian population to do, or not to do, an act against their will and well-being.
Terrorism in India, formally is a strategy of violence, which is Hindu-centric-and-focused, committed by the perpetrators to generate fear, disruption, and with ultimate aim to secure their nefarious objective of balkanization of the Indian nation, the rubbishing of its ancient civilization, secured through capitulation of the civilian law- abiding citizens. This definition, while it is relevant to India specifically, is in broad conformity with the brief official definition used in US3 which defines terrorism as: “Life threatening acts to coerce civilian population or influence policy of a government by intimidation and thus affect its conduct.”
India has had chequered history of experiencing such Hindu- centric terrorism.
