Chapter 12
LITIGANTS, LAWYERS AND JUDGES continues...
In the year 1942, there was great agitation by Beoparies (Traders) of Lahore against the government protesting against some of its measures affecting them. There was a hartal and the government ordered the breaking open of the shops under its emergency powers. On behalf of the Beoparies, I contested the action of the government in the High Court before Sir Douglas Young. I was again successful in getting the order quashed.
In November, 1942, Sir Douglas Young sounded me if I would like to be considered for an appointment to the Bench. I told him that I would like to be excused. When he repeated his offer the next month, I got out of it on the plea that I would not like a temporary additional appointment on the Bench. Sir Douglas retired in January, 1943 and was succeeded by Sir Trevor Harries, who, after having been judge of the Allahabad High Court, was then the Chief justice of Patna High Court. As President of the Bar Association I offered him felicitations on his assuming charge of his office.
