Recreations continues..
Fireworks and entertainment by dancing girls were customary. All this has now been stopped owing to the zealous work of the Mahajan Suaddar Sabha organised by Lala Hans Raj, Bakshi Jaishi Ram, Bakshi Sohan Lal and others. The last Mahajan conference I attended from Gurdaspur was held at Lahore, at Fane Road at Bakshi Tek Chand’s residence. My father presided over it. He was taken in a great procession through the city and I was with him. I enjoyed the fun. R. B. Bakshi Sohan Lal was chairman of the reception committee. The leading organizers were Lala Amar Nath Savara, Lala Gurditta Mal, Accounts Officer and Lala Rijha Mal of the N. W. R. The leading Mahajan families who were counted amongst millionaires in the Kangra District were Rai Sahib Mehta Kanehya Lalof Paprola, Kushala Ram, Zaildar of Sujanpur Tira, the Kaistha family of Nagrota, the Dewan family of Kotla, Sanghois of Haripur, Kenehya Shah Ghau and Lala Hardial Shah Koharu of Nurpur, and the Bakshis of Nurpur. In the Gurdaspur District, we had Kirpa Shah and Sohnu Shah of Pathankot, Bhane Shah of Dina Nagar, Ram Shah of Gurdaspur, Gosain Shah of Darman, Shankar Shah and Kunj Lal Shah of Lalian. Elsewhere, Jamiat Rai’s family of Bal, Shahs of Chuharmunda, Nihale Shah of Pasrur, Phuman Shah and Laju Shah of Ikhlaspur, Beli Shah of Chhale, Charanjit Lal vakil of Gurdaspur, S. Dorangla was full of Mahajan families of great substance. The most notable among them were Budha Shah, Devi Dayal Shah, Kashi Ram Shah and Labhu Shah and Wadhawa Shah. Gurdas Nagal of Lachhi Shah,Kashi Shah of Kathua, and Nand Lal Shah and Sant Ram Shah of Narot Jaimal Singh were men of great influence in the Ilaqa.
