A trip to Europe continues...
As the university was closed for vacation, we could not meet any of the professors or have the benefit of a talk with the students which I would have very much liked to do.
In London, I was invited to tea by Sir Shadi Lal. He lived in a very simple style in a flat and had his food specially prepared for him. It was here that I first met Mr. Janki Nath Wazir, then studying law in London. He is now the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. The a~quaintance then made developed into friendship when on return from London he started his practice at the Lahore High Court Bar.
English food is simple but healthy. I particularly liked the fish and chips served at some of the restaurants in London and its suburbs. Icecreams prepared at some of the London eating houses were delicious.
On my return to India, a friend asked me, “What have you seen in Britain and what impression have you brought with you”? My answer was that I found the British very honest and straightforward in their business dealings. Their integrity is beyond question and their business morality is very high. They work very hard but they know how to enjoy life during their leisure hours. They eat well and drink well. Night life is full of gaiety and enjoyment. I told my friend that we could well copy some of these virtues.
As already stated, we flew from London to Paris. It took us about half an hour. I was determined when I left London to see no more churches, cathedrals and museums. I was fed up with them. In Paris we stayed in a hotel where some of the staff knew English. No drinking water is provided in these hotels and it is said “Water of Paris is not worth drinking. It is used only for washing purposes or for cooking food.” As I was a teetotaller, I had to live on Vichy water in Paris.
