A trip to Europe continues....
The channel at this place is very rough and it is interesting to watch the waves. In Scotland, we also went to the fort of Sterling where Mary Queen of Scots used to live. We also visited the town of Liverpool and the manufacturing areas of Britain, Lancashire and Manchester. We saw how unemployed persons kept on standing in front of factories waiting for a chance to get employed. In Scotland we saw some people on the roadside playing on their bagpipes and getting money from the travellers. I also went to Brighton, another seaside resort in England. Mr. Jindra Lal was my social monitor in dealing with waiters in hotels and restaurants. For every little service done, we had to say “Thank you” and whenever I forgot it, he reminded me of it. So I learnt to say “Thank you” every time something was done for me. Of course we had to tip the waiters as well. Having had a very good time in Britain, we flew to Paris.
This description of my visit to Britain would be incomplete without mentioning a visit I paid to a farm owned by an old British farmer. It was a large farm in which all work was done by machinery. The planting of seeds was done by tractors or by machines drawn by horses. In the same way, reaping the crop and threshing were done mechanically. We actually saw the work being done at the farm by different kinds of agricultural implements. The farmer had also a piggery and he used to breed cows. All these animals were not only strong but beautiful. The cows yielded as much milk as 20 pounds at one milking. At my request, the farmer also took us through his residential house. I was interested in finding whether Englishmen always have a dining room and a drawing room apart from their bedrooms. I discovered that the farmer had a living room with a fireplace where all the members of the family ordinarily sat but there was a separate well decorated drawing room also.
