A trip to Europe continues....
While Mr. Jagan Nath was cashing his cheque at the counter of the Lloyds Bank it struck me that if my cheque on Grindlays could be cashed here, it would save us a trip to Parliament Street.
I enquired from the cashier whether he could cash my cheque on Grindlays. He answered in the affirmative and after taking my cheque on Grindlays Bank without questioning me about my identity or about my credit, he paid me! Such a thing was not possible at the counter of a bank in India. Even if an Indian bank agrees to cash a cheque on a different bank, it would take half an hour over it and ask a number of questions and take a number of
guarantees. When we ordered suits at a well known tailor’s, no one asked for an advance. All that they asked was our address at the
hotel. The suits were sent to the hotel with a bill attached to the parcell In dealings with Englishmen, we felt quite safe, but that was not our experience on the continent, particularly in Italy.
From London, we arranged a trip by car to Scotland and Wales. We were a party of four; Mr. Justice Tek Chand, Pandit Nanak Chand, Mr. Jindra Lal, son of Justice Sir Jai Lal, then studying in England for the Bar, and myself. The car was driven by an English chauffer who also acted as the guide. We saw the whole of the British Isles from Inverness to Tourqay! We visited English and Scottish lakes which have as wonderful scenery as one can hope to find anywhere in the world. In Edinburgh, we went round the fort and had the first taste of grouse. The hotel charged a good bit for this luxury, but I did not think much of it. Apart from the English and Scottish lakes, I was very much impressed by the scenery of the Welsh seaside place, Ludadnow. Here we stayed in a hotel by the seaside.
