Chapter 1 Continues…
As stated above, violence to overawe a civilian population murder and arson to attain political goals is terrorism. This violence is also a tool to dismember a nation but colluding with anti-national internal violent groups such as Naxalites and rump LTTE . The concern in this study is how to, as Indians, deter terror and safeguard national integrity. In India we see the danger clearly – in Kashmir, Assam, Northeast, as earlier in Punjab.
The dismemberment of India is without doubt is the goal of Islamic terrorism, of Maoists, Naxalite violence. In 1998, the now deceased Osama Bin Laden had identified the USA, Israel and India as the main enemies of Islam and targets for their terrorism.
In November 1999, in a rally in Peshawar, the “patron” of Lashkar-e-Taiba reaffirmed this target/goal. India is thus under a looming terrorist siege today, and we need an effective solution for that menace. Thus, terrorism implies secessionism as goal to balkanize a nation. But Is then democratic India in danger of balkanization?
With the dismemberment of Pakistan into two in 1971, dismantling of the USSR into sixteen sovereign countries in 1991, and the balkanization of Yugoslavia into four in 1995, it is now clear that neither political ideology of the rulers of the state, nor we have seen religion can by itself be the glue to keep a people together as a nation, as demonstrated in Pakistan in 1971, cannot by itself create social cohesion and preserve national integrity.. Ethnicity also cannot be a sufficient adhesive as shown by the prolonged conflicts in Nigeria.
Common culture as in Sri Lanka has also proved to be inadequate to keep a people from conflict.
Hence, we need to ponder as to what has so far, and what will in the future, keep India together as a nation. Indian territory has not shrunk even one inch since, even if every inch of Akhand Bharat is not yet within its control especially in Kashmir and Ladakh.
