Rajiv Gandhi, The Prime Minister continues...
The brutal Assassination of Indira Gandhi,
the tidal wave of anger it generated, the terrorist violence that was spreading
to several states in the North, the threat to the unity and integrity of thenation – all were crucial factors that influenced the people. Besides, theleadership provided by Rajiv Gandhi during the two crucial months afterthe assassination of Indira Gandhi was a decisive factor. It is an interestingaspect of India’s political history that whenever the nation faced a crisisthe people generally turned towards the Congress party.
That party, despiteits much-talked-about weaknesses such as a flabby organizational structureor absence of clearly defined ideological positions on issues, seems to beconscious of its historic responsibility. Ever since its formation in 1885, ithas lived through many significant, eventful and inspiring historical
contexts.
It never exhausted itself fully. Gandhiji had advised that it shouldbe disbanded after the attainment of freedom. But it remains ever-presentand ever-relevant. In a way, the Congress party symbolizes an ever-changingbut eternal India.
Rajiv Gandhi was sworn in as Prime Minister on 31 December 1984.
It was a momentous occasion in his life as it was the culmination of apilgrimage he had set out on to seek the blessings of the people for leadinga traumatized nation. He had every reason to be happy with the abundantmeasure of support they gave him. Addressing the nation Rajiv Gandhi
said:
“You have given my party and me your confidence in overflowingmeasure. Who can ask for more? And how can we prove worthy of it? Only by working for you with unremitting faith and humility, summoning all our reserves of strength and energy, being asunsparing with ourselves as you have been generous with your trust.
I do not regard it as my victory or even the victory of my party, which commences its hundredth year of service; it is the victory ofthe people of India. You have spoken clearly and unmistakably, you have given a mandate for unity, strength and harmony.
