Global Terror Infrastructure and Implications for India continues...
Fortunately, the advent of the Rajapaksa brothers in the Sri Lanka Government a decisive drive against the LTTE by the Sri Lanka Government decimated the LTTE by, May 19, 2009, when Supremo of LTTE V. Prabhakaran was shot dead on the beach by Sri Lankan forces. Today, the rump LTTE abroad has been reduced to petitioning the Europeans bleeding hearts for a “Genocide” Commission to indict the Sri Lankan Government.
Nevertheless, it is still worth studying the modus operandi of the LTTE. The LTTE terror strategy had four key components:
(i) the use of times of peace to prepare for war, in line with the Maoist doctrine of “retreat and recuperate”;
(ii) an attempt to attain total control over the Tamil struggle to gain legitimacy as the sole representative of Sri Lankan Tamils— it is with this motive that the LTTE has eliminated almost all opposition to it;
(iii) a subordination of the political struggle to the military one— hence, it is not interested in a political solution through dialogue; and,
(iv) a mixture of guerrilla and conventional warfare tactics in battle.
In addition, the Tigers made use of suicide bombers as a tactic. Though many militant groups followed this technique, the LTTE is one of the few organizations to adopt it as an article of faith. A separate unit known as the “Black Tigers” existed to organize attacks on civilian and military targets and eliminate key leaders by these means.
The “paws” of the LTTE extend worldwide from Canada and the United States in the West to Australia in the east, due to the presence of Sri Lankan Tamils in those countries who had fled from the conflict in Sri Lanka. Of late, due to crackdowns on the LTTE, by the United States, Canada, India and South Africa, their support base has narrowed. But their links exist in some West European countries like Britain and Germany, Nordic countries, besides Australia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and South Africa.
